Forest School at Hardwicke

Intent

At Hardwicke Parochial Primary Academy, the vision for Forest School is to create a resource that supports the holistic development of all learners. The aim is to provide regular, inclusive sessions that are learner-centered, supporting not only academic growth but also personal, social, physical, and emotional development. Forest School is designed to offer new and meaningful experiences that foster resilience, confidence, and independence, helping children thrive both within and beyond the school environment.

Implementation

Forest School at Hardwicke Parochial Primary Academy is delivered on a dedicated on-site area, purposefully developed to support outdoor, nature-based learning. All year groups across the school will have regular access to Forest School sessions, ensuring that every learner benefits from this unique aspect of the curriculum throughout their primary years. Sessions follow a learner-led approach, with activities planned in response to the interests, needs, and developmental stages of the children. Learners will participate in practical, engaging experiences such as tree climbing, using tools, and fire lighting, all within a carefully risk-assessed environment. These activities are designed to encourage children to assess and manage risk safely. Additionally, learners will be taught to consider their environmental impact, promoting a sense of responsibility and care for the natural world. This inclusive approach ensures that Forest School is accessible and meaningful for all children, regardless of ability or background.

Impact

Through Forest School, learners will develop essential life skills including risk management, problem-solving, collaboration, and environmental responsibility. These skills are intended to be transferable, supporting learners in their everyday lives both inside and outside of school. The experiences offered are expected to positively influence mental and physical well-being, promote confidence and self-esteem, and enhance overall personal development, contributing to the long-term growth of resilient, reflective, and capable individuals.
