What is the PE and Sport Premium Funding?
The PE and Sport Premium is funding provided by the UK government to primary schools to help improve the quality of Physical Education (PE), school sport, and physical activity. Its aim is to ensure that all children are more active, enjoy a range of sports, and develop healthy habits that can last a lifetime.
The money is given to schools each year and is based on the number of pupils in Years 1 to 6. Schools must use this funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to their PE and sport provision. This means the funding should benefit children now and continue to have a lasting impact in future years.
Schools might use the funding to hire specialist PE coaches, provide teacher training, buy new sports equipment, offer a wider range of after-school clubs, provide extra swimming lessons, or improve outdoor play areas.
To ensure transparency, schools are required to publish details of how they spend the funding each year on their website. They must also explain the impact it has had on pupils’ participation and physical development.
The government believes this funding helps children become healthier, more focused, and more confident, and that it supports their academic and emotional wellbeing.
