History at Hardwicke

  We are Historians

At Hardwicke Primary School, our History curriculum is inspired by our vision to “Do Everything in Love” and underpinned by our values to love, learn and live. Through a carefully planned and ambitious curriculum, we aim to develop pupils’ curiosity about the past and their understanding of how history has shaped the world they live in today.

We want our pupils to explore the past with open minds and caring hearts—showing friendship, forgiveness, perseverance, courage, service and respect as they learn about people and events from different times and cultures. Our curriculum is designed in line with the National Curriculum and is carefully sequenced to ensure that pupils build secure substantive knowledge of Britain's past and the wider world, alongside the disciplinary knowledge needed to work as historians. Children learn to ask perceptive questions, analyse evidence, identify similarities and differences, consider multiple perspectives and develop well-reasoned judgements about the past. Through this, they gain an understanding of the experiences of others, fostering empathy, fairness, respect and an appreciation of diversity.

At Hardwicke, our intention is that when children leave us, they will:

  • Hold a keen interest in the past and be inspired to know more.
  • Have a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world.
  • Build rich historical knowledge and vocabulary that enables them to make meaningful connections across periods of time.
  • Be equipped to ask perceptive questions, analyse and weigh evidence, understand different historical interpretations, and develop informed judgements.
  • Understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies, and the relationships between different groups.
  • Understand how past events reflect upon who they are as individuals and their own attitudes and values.
  • Have acquired a sense of their cultural heritage.
  • Have an awareness of how international and national events are linked to regional and local experiences.

Through engaging and thought-provoking lessons, our children love learning about the past, learn from it to deepen their understanding of the world, and live with compassion, curiosity, and respect for others — ready to make a positive difference in the future.
