Music at Hardwicke

At Hardwicke School, our intent is to provide a high-quality music education that inspires creativity, builds confidence and fosters a lifelong appreciation of music. Rooted in our school vision, "Do everything in love," we recognise music as a powerful means of self-expression, communication and personal development, supporting pupils' emotional well-being and sense of belonging.

Through a broad, balanced and carefully sequenced curriculum, pupils from Reception to Year 6 progressively develop their musical knowledge, skills and understanding through listening, performing, composing and appraising. In line with the National Curriculum for England, pupils learn to sing and use their voices confidently, perform and compose both independently and collaboratively, review and evaluate music, and understand how music is created, produced and communicated through the inter-related dimensions of music and the use of notation.

Through exploring a diverse range of musical styles, genres, traditions, cultures and historical periods, pupils develop an appreciation of music's rich diversity and gain an understanding of its significance and contribution to society.

We aim for all pupils to:

  • Develop musical knowledge, vocabulary and skills progressively
  • Sing and perform with increasing accuracy, confidence and expression.
  • Create, refine and perform their own musical compositions.
  • Record and communicate musical ideas using notation and other appropriate symbols.
  • Listen critically and respond thoughtfully to a wide range of music from different traditions and cultures.
  • Appreciate music as a universal form of expression, creativity and communication.
  • Experience success, enjoyment and a strong sense of belonging through musical participation.

Music at Hardwicke is inclusive, ambitious and accessible to all. We are committed to ensuring that every child, regardless of background, starting point or prior experience, is supported and challenged to achieve their full musical potential.
